THE LAST SUMMER DAY

THE LAST SUMMER DAY

Well I thought a lot today /on this sad last summer day / as I was watchin’ more and more / like the waves rolled on the shore. // There’s nobody all around, / the backwash is the only sound, / the blue sea my only sight, // ev’rything is still and quiet. / Oh, my tongue just can’t tell / how this seascape gets me well, / I'm in the pearl of the Purple Coast, / there’s no place I care for most. / I find a seashell in the sand, / hidden down near where I stand: / it seems so safe, its shield so thick / but in the waves it gets so weak. / So I look at the sunset line, / where the last sunbeams shine / but what’s up to the other side, / beyond that sea, so deep and wide? // Oh, strange noises reach my ears, / terror weapons rise our fears, / exploding bombs in Middle East, / it ain't a firework, there’s no feast. // Kids were happy with their folks / but their dreams –just like the stalks, / of the flowers they took to school- / Have been broken by some fool. / The powerful man says ''We’ll win!'' / he says that with a strange grin, / ‘cause with clenched teeth he speaks / yes, he really gave the creeps. // Ev’rything just seems the same / but I don’t know who to blame: / here my life still goes ahead / I don’t know why, I feel so bad. // I’m like the pearl inside that shell, / I only hope it’s for a spell, / I have no shelter where to hide, / I can only face the risin’ tide.
